Filmmaker Robin Hessman follows five ordinary Russians living in extraordinary times — from their sheltered Soviet childhood to the collapse of the Soviet Union during their teenage years and the constantly shifting political landscape of post-Soviet Russia. My Perestroika has had a busy year: nominated for a Grand Jury Prize at Sundance, it was included in New York’s New Directors/New Films series, won its director a Center for Documentary Studies filmmaker award at the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival, received a special jury mention at the Silverdocs Film Festival, and recently won Best Film at the Milwaukee Film Festival.
